Genomics & Mental Health Q&A Session
Thursday, 26 February 2026, 1:00pm-2:00pm, online
Curious about how genomics fits into mental health practice? This informal drop‑in session is a chance to ask about testing, referrals, red flags, and anything else you’d like to understand. The conversation will be hosted by the NT GMS clinical genetics and mental health leads, who will be on hand to answer questions and offer practical guidance.

The utilisation of genomic information forms a central pillar of the NHS 10-year plan. It is anticipated that by 2035 half of all healthcare interactions will be informed by genomic insights and other predictive analytics (p119 NHS 10 Year Health Plan).
Genomics may feel very far removed from day-to-day practice in mental health services. However there are already opportunities to use genetic investigations to improve health outcomes and implementation of pharmacogenetically guided prescribing is coming soon.
The education team at the NT GMS has identified a need for more education and training specifically tailored for mental health care professionals.
The idea of the session is to provide an open forum for people to bring their questions to the GMS. The Q&A be hosted by a clinical geneticist and the mental health leads from the NT Genomic Medicine Service.
All questions are welcome. For example:
- What is the Genomic Medicine Service?
- Are there red flags for a genetic conditions?
- How do I order a genetic test?
- When should I refer to a Clinical Geneticist?
