How to request genetic testing for your patients

Overview

This is an introductory programme for healthcare professionals (HCP) who have been/ will be involved in the consenting of patients for genomic testing and the requesting of genomic tests. HCP undertaking this programme will be taught about genomic testing, consent discussion and implications of results to patients and families.  The programme is in line with the Health Education England Genomics Education Programme (HEE GEP) competency framework.

Learning outcomes

      • Understand the genomic predispositions to disease  
      • Request appropriate genomic testing using the national genomic test directory  
      • Understand the different purposes of genomic testing in patients with rare inherited diseases and cancer 
      • Understand the importance and application of informed consent in the field of genomic medicine generally 
      • Explain genomic results in terms of diagnosis, prediction and uncertainty
      • Explain genomic results in terms of implications for the management of patient care  
      • Discuss the consequences of genomic test results in terms of the patient’s family members 
      • Evaluate and apply the skills necessary to support individuals who have genomic results that affect their care
      • Critically evaluate current and potential future ethical, legal and social issues of genome testing
