Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers — they’re a powerful tool for career development at any stage. Whether you’re re-entering the workforce, changing careers, or upskilling in your current role, apprenticeships provide a unique blend of practical experience and structured learning.

We are proud to support apprentices at different stages of their careers. This year, we highlight the journeys of two of our apprentices, Balbir Lehto and Paul Ryves, who are making the most of their experiences.

Meet Balbir: Data Analyst Apprentice

Information Analyst (Apprentice) – Level 4 Data Analyst Apprenticeship

Why choose an apprenticeship?

For Balbir, the apprenticeship offered the perfect pathway to re-enter the workforce after an extended break caring for her family. She saw it as an opportunity to gain real-world experience while receiving structured training and mentorship.

“Returning to the workplace with support from mentors and additional training has provided a good balance between real work experience and gaining additional skills needed for my role. The apprenticeship has helped me start a second career in a field that I had not worked in before. Before starting the apprenticeship, I didn’t know how versatile they could be in helping people in varying stages of their careers.”

One of the key benefits that Balbir has noticed is the ability to balance work and learning effectively.

“I like having time set aside from my work tasks for additional learning and training.”

Paul’s Journey: Coaching Apprenticeship

Programme Director, Genomic Medicine Service Alliance – Level 5 Professional Coaching Apprenticeship

Why choose an apprenticeship?

With years of experience mentoring colleagues in the NHS and within universities and schools, Paul sought to further develop his skills through an apprenticeship. He saw this as an opportunity to enhance his coaching abilities and provide even greater support to those looking for career guidance.

“I have been a practising mentor for many years both in the NHS and externally in universities and schools. Providing mentorship to colleagues and individuals needing direction in their career or career choice has been a privilege and something I have really enjoyed. I saw the opportunity of the coaching apprenticeship via Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) as a chance to improve my own personal development and to further my skill set, with the aim of being able to help others achieve their individual goals. I think often apprenticeships are considered for individuals at the start of their career, however, there are plenty of opportunities to undertake an apprenticeship at any stage of your career as continuous professional development.”

For Paul, the most rewarding aspect has been the ability to apply his skills in real-life coaching scenarios and share experiences with colleagues in his cohort.

“As part of gaining the apprenticeship qualification, you are required to coach a number of individuals. It’s been great seeing these individuals gain confidence, change mindsets, and achieve their goals! Also, being able to bounce off colleagues on your cohort with ideas and problems has been invaluable. It’s been a great opportunity to meet new people where you work.”

Why apprenticeships matter

Balbir and Paul’s experiences highlight the breadth and flexibility of apprenticeships. They are not only a stepping stone for young professionals but also an excellent opportunity for career changers and experienced professionals to develop new skills. Apprenticeships provide structured learning, real-world application, and professional growth, making them a valuable investment for individuals and organisations alike.

Have you ever considered an apprenticeship at a later stage in your career? Share your thoughts or experiences in the comments! As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we commend all apprentices for their hard work and dedication. Their journeys showcase the transformative power of apprenticeships in shaping careers and fostering lifelong learning.
