Using this website
This website is run by the North Thames Genomic Medicine Service. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:
- zoom in up to 200% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using a keyboard
- navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader
We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability: https://mcmw.abilitynet.org.uk
How accessible this website is
We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:
- Some images and image buttons do not have appropriate alternative text
- At 200% zoom and in mobile view, some elements overlap or obscure focused content
- Some list elements are not coded correctly, which may cause issues for screen reader users
- Some of the PDFs on the site may not be accessible, these are nationally set forms, and we are working to improve the accessibility

Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.
(a) Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:
- Keyboard Focus Visibility: Some interactive elements—such as the ‘Language’ dropdown and submenus under ‘Our Work’ and ‘For healthcare professionals’—do not display a visible focus indicator when navigated by keyboard. This fails to meet WCAG 2.4.7 Focus Visible, making it harder for keyboard users to know where they are on the page.
- Text Resizing: Certain text does not scale appropriately when users increase text size in their browser settings. This does not comply with WCAG 1.4.4 Resize Text, affecting users with visual impairments.
- PDF Accessibility: The ‘Molecular, Cytogenetic, Neurogenetic and NIPD Test Request Form’ PDF is not fully accessible to users relying on screen readers. It does not meet WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships and WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content, as the document structure and labelling are not screen-reader friendly.
(b) Disproportionate burden
At present, we have not identified any content where resolving accessibility issues would constitute a disproportionate burden under the regulations.
(c) Content not within the scope of the accessibility regulations
- PDFs and Other Documents: The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they are not essential for providing our services. For example, we do not plan to fix archived annual reports or historic meeting minutes.
Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards. - Live Video: We do not plan to add captions to live video streams, as live video is exempt from the accessibility regulations.
- Third-party Content: Some content on our site is provided by third parties and is not under our control (for example, links to external websites or embedded social media feeds). This content is also outside the scope of the regulations.
